God doesn't have to prove itself

I read the book "Faith doesn't mean shutting you brain off" again and it made me mad – again.

There's this argument:
"If god showed itself, we couldn't decide anymore whether we want to have a relationship with him or not."
Then they go on framing it as us humans being evil choosing god's side to be more powerful and this choice being the only one we'd have. As if we wouldn't have another choice. I'd say: Yes, we wouldn't have another choice. But why? Not for the sake of us trying to gain more power. Rather for the sake of us trying to save our ass. What would be the other option? Not god, aka: satan. Satan ended up in hell as we know, so why choose satan? Why choose suffering?

I'm still wondering: What does this have to do with free will? If we'd know god existed, we could still decide on which side we'd want to be. But the sides would be: God or not god/satan.

Here's another opinion: God not showing itself just takes use further away from him as we are more sceptic to believe he exists, so why choose god?
